How to Create a Natural Glam Makeup Look

Those of you who know, know that I live for a natural face beat. You know, a nice nude with a pop of lip color. Maybe a little eyeliner to jazz it up. But not by much. Since it is the month we celebrate love, I wanted to create a look for Valentine’s Day that was natural, yet glamorous at the same time. To achieve this look, I enlisted the help of my trusted friend/sister, Naomie of Blushed By Naomie.

Manuka Honey is KING

So brief disclaimer: I am not a dermatologist or an herbalist. I am someone who tries to find the simplest ways to get maximum results, naturally. I’ve been very vocal on this here blog about my skin. That time I called myself not so pretty and healed my face in a week was really the beginning of my slight obsession with natural products. Now I won’t say I get all Martha Stewart in the kitchen and make everything myself. I don’t have time or patience for that. But I do try to find products that have the least amount of chemicals. And thus began my slight obsession with manuka honey.

In My Makeup Bag

Many people tell me that I have really nice skin. I truly appreciate that but it wasn’t always easy. I didn’t have problem skin until college. When it got bad, I got meds from the derm that not only cleared my skin but made it amazingly dewy to the touch. When I felt like my skin was clear enough, I stopped using the meds.

They always say, don’t fix what ain’t broke…or something like that. One day, I decided to see if my meds would still work although I didn’t need it. WELP. I totally jacked up my face. But in one week’s time, I cleared it up again, this time using all natural products.

So anyway, ever since then, I’ve pretty much had clear skin. I’m not really big on makeup so I like to keep my face simple. Over the years, I’ve tried several products and I eventually settled on what works best for my face.

Gone are the days that I just wear a tinted moisturizer to work. Trying to be a grown up now, lol. Granted, I still love my MakeUp Forever foundation, I just refuse to buy a new bottle. I’ve had the same one for THREE years.

My makeup bag looks a little different now. I don’t have the energy to do a tutorial but I will tell you (in order) what I use to achieve my everyday face.

Tinted moisturizers

If your skin does not require full coverage makeup, I would highly suggest looking into tinted moisturizers. They give you some color without the weight of foundation. Recently, I tried Iman’s foundation but it made my face look cakey after a while. Who wants to look made up?

P.S. Not sure what the big hype is about Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 but it’s too rich for my blood. And the gay guy at Sephora said it’s not that great.

Here are three tinted moisturizers I’ve tried and really like:

1. E.L.F.’s Studio Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20. It’s the cheapest and I love to use it during the week at work.

2. MAC’s Studio Moisture Tint SPF 15. I forgot I had a sample of this. Very sheer and doesn’t leave my face oily.

3. Smashbox’s Sheer Focus Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15. Also sheer but it gives a little more coverage than the MAC version.

I’m coming to terms with the fact that I just have oily skin. In efforts to alleviate the problem, I’ve searched Holy Youtube for solutions. What I found sounded crazy but supposedly a lot of women with oily skin trust this method. You have foundation primer, and then you have milk of magnesia. Yes, on your face. She also uses a chaffing cream but that is entirely too much for me. So far, the milk (used the same way as in the video) seems to be working. We’ll see in the long run. As well as with the products listed above.

Products galore

So a while back I fed my beauty obsession. Just a little snack since you know we ARE in a recession. I’ve been hearing whispers about these products and decided to give them a try.

1. NARS Super Orgasm Blush (Blame Drake)

Definitely not what I thought it would be. It takes a lot of swipes across my cheek before I actually see a hit of glitter. No blush. Maybe it’s too light for my complexion. Oh well, too late now. I just heard about the NARS Illuminator. I suppose it is like a liquid bronzer. I want to try it but I’m not okay with the price. I have one high-end product and that’s it for now. Lucy disapproves.

2. Milani Bake Bronzer

I LOVE THIS THING!!!! I mean I use it as a bronzer all over my body. I feel like a queeeeen to beeee with it on. I also love putting it on my collerbone. I just be shinning! Lucy approves!

3. Alba Acnedote Deep Pore Wash

Not a fan. I tried it because yet and still, I do not have a face wash that I am a fan of and that actually works. And this claims to be a natural product. I’ve been using it for weeks and have not seen any improvement on my skin. Lucy disapproves.

4. NYX Concealor Stick

Yay for this! I’ve been trying to find a good concealer. I’m lying. I’ve been using my foundation as concealer. Major fail. My sister told me about this one. Of course I use a darker shade (CS09). It’s pretty fabulous for me. I hate putting too much work in applying makeup and the stick is simple. Just swipe right under your eyebrow or under your eyes. Clean and easy, no mess. Cheap too. Only thing is that I had to travel around the world to find it. For some reason, Walmart, Target nor Sally’s sold it. I found it at a beauty supply store. Lucy approves!

5. MAC Loud and Lovely Cremesheen Glass

I really need to slow down on using this product. At $19, you’d think I’d take my time but I love it so much. It’s smooth, not sticky and it looks great on my lips. Mind you, I have naturally dark lips and it still comes out with a pink tint. Lucy approves!

6. Ardell Invisiband Eyelashes

My friend always wears these and I was super jealz and had to have them lol. Coocoo. I love false lashes but I haven’t really been a fan of strip ones. More so because I didn’t know how to apply them myself (and still don’t. I finally found them at Sally’s and my sister put them on for me. But if you’d like a good tutorial, this girl from youtube has an ok one. See here.

Unfortunately they only lasted for that day. I guess I slept on my face too hard because when I woke up, they were NOT curled anymore. My right eye was totally flat. My sister said she doesn’t  use the lash grip glue that comes with it. Not sure if that would’ve made a difference. I approve of the lashes. I just hate that they only lasted one night. But I will try it again with a different glue and see what happens.

4/6 approves is not too bad. Have you tried any of these products? Like? No like?

Go bold

My night out look for makeup is usually neutral: dark eyes, blush and a neutral lip. Or vice versa. Easy on the eyes and bold on the lips. It’s one of the other for me. Going bold on both the eyes and lips can sometimes come off….clownish, for lack of a better word. So I’ve stayed away from it. But I figured, I don’t have my ears pierced. And I did choose to rock a bold short haircut, why not liven up my face? Make my face, an accessory.

So I experimented before heading out for the night. I am NOT good at applying eye shadow. I leave it alone because I rub my eyes a lot. BUT, if you’re like me, try Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion. It has worked for me in the past.

First, let me take you through my entire ritual. I brought this little goodie from Sephora: Fresh Brown Sugar Lip Polish.  The dry winter weather has been taking a toll on my lips so I’ve been searching for a good product to exfoliate them. I’ve used it only once so far but it feels good and tastes good! Basically, you apply it to your lips and use a moist/warm washcloth to scrub your lips. If you’re not interested in spending a grip on this product, nothing beats a home creation. Back in the day, I took applied Vaseline to my lips as a base before scrubbing. I then took my toothbrush, rinsed it in hot water and brushed my lips. It works!

Then I applied this lip balm to my lips to seal in the moisture and keep them from chapping. Again, you can use whatever you like.

I applied my Make Up Forever HD foundation and got started on my eyes. Because my eye lids recess into the crease of my eyes, I like to use black eyeliner to make my eyes pop. I’m obsessed with finding the perfect eyeliner so I have many. I found this one by Maybelline and gave it a try with perfecting my “cat eye”.

I used a few different color combinations on my eyes. Blues and golds, mostly. And on my lips, I used my new favorite fushia lip color, Intriguing by Stila and a magenta lip liner. Play around with it and I’m sure you’ll look fab!

And there you have it. 🙂

Spoiled Opulence Spa Party

Yesterday I had the pleasure to attend the spa party at Spoiled Opulence Salon. I had such a great time.

Upon arrival, I received yummy snacks.

Salon owner and celebrity hair stylist, Beautii Joseph gave me a facial. My face felt smooth as a baby’s bottom afterwards. She used Armida and Andyss products. All natural. Yay!

After my facial, I got a back massage. Needless to say, I was well relaxed!

I haaave to get these two antioxidant drinks! So so yummy! [ Le Vive & Cran Aloe ]

And best of all, I got a HUGE gift bag for my attendance. Love gifts! Thank you, Beautii!

Make up forever fabulousness

When I say I’ve found the foundation of my dreams…..

My shade: 178

A month ago I went into Sephora looking to try something better than the MAC liquid foundation I was using. I used to love it but it kept making my skin greasy. I got tired of blotting my face at every restroom visit. I heard about Make Up Forever and decided to give it a try. When the consultant applied it to my face, I immediately saw a difference. I don’t really have troublesome skin but I do have dark spots and a pimple or two here and there. See here for when my skin was bad.

Info about Make Up Forever HD Invisible Cover Foundation from Sephora’s site:

What it is:
An oil-free medium-to-full-coverage liquid foundation that covers skin imperfections flawlessly while remaining invisible on-screen and in real life.

What it does:
This foundation creates a soft-focus effect, which is designed to meet the coverage concerns of those in the spotlight. It leaves your complexion with such a flawless finish, it can withstand bright or harsh lighting.

What else you need to know:
This Sephora-exclusive foundation comes in 25 shades to suit all skintones.

What I love about this product:

  1. It gives my face a dewy hue
  2. A little goes a long way (especially if you do not have problem skin and just want a clean look)
  3. I don’t have to blot my face every two seconds!

This is what I look like with make up forever:

I know make up is trial and error for each woman but it doesn’t hurt to try it on the next time you stop by Sephora.

How to Get Rid of Eye Puffiness

How to Get Rid of Eye Puffiness

Interesting day yesterday. A commenter on yesterday’s post told me that under my eyes look like a 50 year old’s. Well I’m only 25 so that’s has got to change. I actually don’t think I have bags under my eyes yet but after googling the subject (Google should be everyone’s best friend), WEBMD says that it is pretty common for young women and men in their 20’s and 30’s to develop dark circles under their eyes. Many factors can cause dark circles and puffiness (bags) under eyes. One of the main factors is heredity. As we get older, the skin under our eyes begin to weaken and lose elasticity. Other causes for the hideous black eyes can be lack of sleep, stress, sun damage or eating habits. Whatever the reason we get them, there are simple solutions to get rid of eye puffiness.

I’m not big on makeup but I do a little something to jazz my face up if I’m going somewhere special. I’m love a clean look and either being dramatic with my eyes (heavy on the liner) or accentuating my lips (bright, bold colors).  Below are my favorite products ever. When I go out, I use these every single time. Keep the look simple. Enjoy.
