How to Create a Natural Glam Makeup Look

Those of you who know, know that I live for a natural face beat. You know, a nice nude with a pop of lip color. Maybe a little eyeliner to jazz it up. But not by much. Since it is the month we celebrate love, I wanted to create a look for Valentine’s Day that was natural, yet glamorous at the same time. To achieve this look, I enlisted the help of my trusted friend/sister, Naomie of Blushed By Naomie.

Fall Makeup Bag

Not much has changed since my last makeup bag post. I still don’t enjoy doing the most with my face but I’m going for a more sultry look this Fall. Natural face, dark lip and bold eyes.

In My Makeup Bag

Many people tell me that I have really nice skin. I truly appreciate that but it wasn’t always easy. I didn’t have problem skin until college. When it got bad, I got meds from the derm that not only cleared my skin but made it amazingly dewy to the touch. When I felt like my skin was clear enough, I stopped using the meds.

They always say, don’t fix what ain’t broke…or something like that. One day, I decided to see if my meds would still work although I didn’t need it. WELP. I totally jacked up my face. But in one week’s time, I cleared it up again, this time using all natural products.

So anyway, ever since then, I’ve pretty much had clear skin. I’m not really big on makeup so I like to keep my face simple. Over the years, I’ve tried several products and I eventually settled on what works best for my face.

Gone are the days that I just wear a tinted moisturizer to work. Trying to be a grown up now, lol. Granted, I still love my MakeUp Forever foundation, I just refuse to buy a new bottle. I’ve had the same one for THREE years.

My makeup bag looks a little different now. I don’t have the energy to do a tutorial but I will tell you (in order) what I use to achieve my everyday face.

Weekend at a glance: thrifting #45

What a fun-filled weekend I had on 7.14! #latepost

I was able to support the lovely Erica of The Fly’s Nest and Jessica of Urben Inventory at their trunk show. Then, I stopped by the Atlanta Street Food Festival for some chow and a little more thrifting.

I’m really big on lashes because I have huge eyes and supposedly long lashes. My eyes are one of my best features so I like to make them pop. On any given day, I’m wearing three different brands of mascara. A friend recently put me on to Maybelline’s Lots of Lashes mascara and boy am I SOLD! It did an amazing job at separating each lash to make them look even more full.

Finally got to see Beasts of the Southern Wild. I highly recommend you seeing that movie! I may or may not have shed a tear or two. You decide.

Woot for my $5 bird necklace find! New fave.

Put on a happy face

The theme for this week’s Fashion Beauty Friend Friday (FBFF) is ‘no makeup’, hosted by Oranges and Apples. I follow a lot of beauty bloggers so I’m pretty excited to see all the naked face pictures. I for one, have no idea what I’m doing with makeup. On a typical day, I’m a tinted moisturizer, blush and mascara girl. I prefer a natural-looking face over a perfectly made up one. And this is partly because I SUCK at makeup application. So I’ll stick with a boring face. Meh.

Here I am. Good mooooorninggggg! Fresh face. No make up. Eyebrows not threaded in WEEKS. Full mustache. Open pores. Fight me.

And because I simply cannot run the risk of running into The Attorney in the elevator with my face like that (judge me), I attempted to put on makeup. FAIL. I spared you by picking a “good” picture out of the bunch.

That’s all, folks. Happy 11.11.11.

Check out Oranges and Apples blog for more posts by other participating bloggers.

Tinted moisturizers

If your skin does not require full coverage makeup, I would highly suggest looking into tinted moisturizers. They give you some color without the weight of foundation. Recently, I tried Iman’s foundation but it made my face look cakey after a while. Who wants to look made up?

P.S. Not sure what the big hype is about Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 but it’s too rich for my blood. And the gay guy at Sephora said it’s not that great.

Here are three tinted moisturizers I’ve tried and really like:

1. E.L.F.’s Studio Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20. It’s the cheapest and I love to use it during the week at work.

2. MAC’s Studio Moisture Tint SPF 15. I forgot I had a sample of this. Very sheer and doesn’t leave my face oily.

3. Smashbox’s Sheer Focus Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15. Also sheer but it gives a little more coverage than the MAC version.

I’m coming to terms with the fact that I just have oily skin. In efforts to alleviate the problem, I’ve searched Holy Youtube for solutions. What I found sounded crazy but supposedly a lot of women with oily skin trust this method. You have foundation primer, and then you have milk of magnesia. Yes, on your face. She also uses a chaffing cream but that is entirely too much for me. So far, the milk (used the same way as in the video) seems to be working. We’ll see in the long run. As well as with the products listed above.

Do you have a tried and true tinted moisturizer that you love? Share!

Hit 25K! [Closed]

Sometime last week I hit 25K views. Yippee! Thank you all for continually reading my thoughts, rants, insights on life, and crazy fashions. Thank you for those of you who show support by commenting, retweeting or sharing specific blog posts with your family and friends. I really do appreciate you. I don’t have much (the recession is REAL) but I’d like to share a few of my favorite things with you.

1. I have tons of little pouches to store my makeup. I found this one at Vicky’s over the Summer. It’s cute and totally portable.

2. Came across this scent, Vixen, and was in love. Just pop it in your bag and go. Spritz a little right before you get out of the car and head out.

3. My Cheekers blush by CoverGirl. I will never stop using this blush. EVER.

4. My Maybelline Falsies mascara. I heart it.

Again, it’s not much but I’m sure someone will like it. Is that person you?

If so:

1. Tell me one thing that you love about my blog.

2. What is your favorite lip gloss (since I’m still looking for one)? 🙂

3. Follow me on Twitter and say HELLO!

I will pick two winners on Friday. Ok…..GO!

Day five: my new tripod

Sunday: 6/19

All of my friends can breathe a sigh of relief because I finally bought a tripod. Unless we’re out in public, I will no longer be asking you to take my photos. GET HAPPY!

H&M top, Marshall's shorts, Target flats

I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about E.l.f. cosmetics. I’ve been looking for a tinted moisturizer for a long time and they happen to make one for THREE bucks! Get excited! They come in a variety of different shades. I’m using Almond right now because that’s the darkest they had in store. I see that they have even darker shades online. I’ll be looking out for the Expresso shade but Almond works for now.

Even though it is a moisturizer, I still use my regular Cetaphil moisturizer as a base since e.l.f. has what feels like a matte finish (which means less shine for us oily skinned folks). And all I need to complete the look is a little blush and then voila! A perfect face for my every day. Bonus: it has SPF protection. WINNING! Check them out here and at your local Target stores.

Products galore

So a while back I fed my beauty obsession. Just a little snack since you know we ARE in a recession. I’ve been hearing whispers about these products and decided to give them a try.

1. NARS Super Orgasm Blush (Blame Drake)

Definitely not what I thought it would be. It takes a lot of swipes across my cheek before I actually see a hit of glitter. No blush. Maybe it’s too light for my complexion. Oh well, too late now. I just heard about the NARS Illuminator. I suppose it is like a liquid bronzer. I want to try it but I’m not okay with the price. I have one high-end product and that’s it for now. Lucy disapproves.

2. Milani Bake Bronzer

I LOVE THIS THING!!!! I mean I use it as a bronzer all over my body. I feel like a queeeeen to beeee with it on. I also love putting it on my collerbone. I just be shinning! Lucy approves!

3. Alba Acnedote Deep Pore Wash

Not a fan. I tried it because yet and still, I do not have a face wash that I am a fan of and that actually works. And this claims to be a natural product. I’ve been using it for weeks and have not seen any improvement on my skin. Lucy disapproves.

4. NYX Concealor Stick

Yay for this! I’ve been trying to find a good concealer. I’m lying. I’ve been using my foundation as concealer. Major fail. My sister told me about this one. Of course I use a darker shade (CS09). It’s pretty fabulous for me. I hate putting too much work in applying makeup and the stick is simple. Just swipe right under your eyebrow or under your eyes. Clean and easy, no mess. Cheap too. Only thing is that I had to travel around the world to find it. For some reason, Walmart, Target nor Sally’s sold it. I found it at a beauty supply store. Lucy approves!

5. MAC Loud and Lovely Cremesheen Glass

I really need to slow down on using this product. At $19, you’d think I’d take my time but I love it so much. It’s smooth, not sticky and it looks great on my lips. Mind you, I have naturally dark lips and it still comes out with a pink tint. Lucy approves!

6. Ardell Invisiband Eyelashes

My friend always wears these and I was super jealz and had to have them lol. Coocoo. I love false lashes but I haven’t really been a fan of strip ones. More so because I didn’t know how to apply them myself (and still don’t. I finally found them at Sally’s and my sister put them on for me. But if you’d like a good tutorial, this girl from youtube has an ok one. See here.

Photo 25 Photo 28

Unfortunately they only lasted for that day. I guess I slept on my face too hard because when I woke up, they were NOT curled anymore. My right eye was totally flat. My sister said she doesn’t  use the lash grip glue that comes with it. Not sure if that would’ve made a difference. I approve of the lashes. I just hate that they only lasted one night. But I will try it again with a different glue and see what happens.

4/6 approves is not too bad. Have you tried any of these products? Like? No like?

FBFF: Beauty products

1. What’s your favorite drug store makeup product and your favorite higher-end product?
Drugstore:  Maybelline Falsies! My new love! You can see a difference with just one coat (but since I’m a volume addict, I usually do two coats). I seriously think with this mascara, and an eyelash comb, you can really make your eyes POP! See?!

High-End: Make Up Forever’s HD Invisible Cover Foundation. See?!

2. Is there one type of product that is your go-to, can’t live without?
Black eye liner. I have big eyes and I like to make them pop and look dramatic (LOVE a cat eye!). It’s safe to say that I have about five  different brands that I use interchangeably! My favorite of the bunch is a Sephora brand, I believe. A close second would be L’Oreal Extra-Intense. The blacker, the better. No pun intended. OH! And lipgloss!!!!!

3. What’s the best hair product you’ve ever used?
Ehhh…I used to be a hair junkie but now I don’t have hair so…this doesn’t apply to me anymore. BUT, I do recall really loving Kinky Curly Knot Today leave in conditioner in my “wash and go” styling days.

4. Fess up, what’s the worst beauty look you’ve tried to rock and look back at now with a little shame or apprehension that you actually did that?
I keep it pretty simple when it comes to makeup. I think if overdone, it can leave you looking very clown-like. A little goes a long way. Plus, I can’t keep up with all the makeup trends so I never really ventured to try something crazy. So I’m basically perfect LOL.

5. When it comes to beauty products, we all use the same basic products. What do you use that helps show off your personal flare and personality?
I keep my face simple: powder, black eyeliner, blush and LIPSTICK! Bright, bold colors to make perfect kissy faces.
