Weekend at a glance: final four #60

Okay so I only found out what Final Four was about a week ago. And no, I didn’t attend any of the free concerts. They weren’t worth the traffic that I knew I’d have to face downtown.

Friday

My good friend Christopher was visiting for the weekend. I suggested we have dinner at a popular Ethiopian restaurant called Desta. Neither of us had ever been but we’ve heard great reviews. Let me tell you, it is all the hype. I ordered the Fish tibs with collards and cabbage. Very friendly wait staff and super yummy food. I seriously need to go back once a month.

Weekend at a glance: laughter #58

Friday

I’m so glad I got the opportunity to see the Atlanta Ballet. Thanks to Mattie of the Atlanta Style Bloggers, I was about to see an amazing performance by the New Choreographic Voices. MAN. I’ll discuss it in Wednesday’s post. It was absolutely phenomenal.

The best and most hilarious part was when my friend Naomie (see: short girl; red pants) got chosen to go on stage and dance. I could not stop laughing. Most importantly, I couldn’t stop thanking Jesus that it wasn’t me the dancer picked. I can’t dance to save my life.

Weekend at a glance: relaxation & rejuvenation #55

Friday

No need to rehash the hell of a week that I had. Needless to say, I was extremely happy to go out for drinks with friends.

My friend Nykita is visiting from Liberia. We met up at Prickly Pear for dinner and drinks. Apparently, Friday was also National Margarita Day so naturally, I indulged in my favorite activity. I’ve been DYING to try this margorona thing since last Summer. Now I see what the hype is about. It’s pretty much amazing.

Weekend at a glance #54

Friday

I got my hair straightened for the first time since my one year anniversary last year. I probably should have checked the weather first because it’s going to rain all week. But I really needed it and I was oh so tired of my puff. I was really pleased with the results!! She worked wonders.

Saturday

What a long and eventful day. Started it off with brunch at Murphy’s with my friend Katrice. It’s so hard to catch up with friends these days. Everyone is busy or busy looking busy. I’m glad I made plans with Katrice. She’s sort of an inspiration :)

And my meal? Spinach, mushrooms, poached eggs on focaccia bread with sundried tomato hollandaise. Yum.

Friend and photographer Tamika took some shots of me that’ll be up for Friday’s style post. Thankfully, the sun was good to me.

Oh! And I met the most interesting (read: odd) guy. While we were taking photos, he was building some type of monument. We asked him what it was and he said it was a Linga. He said it was a symbol of fertility. I googled it later on and did not see any statues similar to what he created but…I’m always here for artistic expression so, do your thing, sir.

To end my night, I had a hot date with a hot girl at TWO Urban Licks.

I love her.

Weekend at a glance: birthday, bop & bangers #53

This year has been really interesting so far. My weekdays have been ridiculously busy with work but my weekends have become so dry. Maybe I’m getting older and the things that used to interest me aren’t interesting anymore. Maybe my friends (not me) are getting older and committed while I’m forever dateless. Maybe everything I want to do is too expensive. I. Don’t. Know. What I do know is that I’ve had several very boring weekends. Yawn.

Being a loner, I do A LOT of things by myself. When I went to a concert at Phipps Arena alone, I knew then that I could go anywhere on my own. But, there are some things that are better done with company. So, I’m really trying to reconnect with those that I never got to spend time with last year. And most likely joining clubs with people who share similar interests. A little bit of knitting, pilates and dancing.

Saturday

So excited to announce that my precious goddaughter is now three years old! Gosh, I remember holding her in the hospital room. I really can’t believe how much of a big girl she is now. We celebrated the little diva with a few of her friends at All Fired Up. I’ll admit, I got a little carried away with my Buddha box. I love art!

Afterwards, I headed over to hear hip-hop lyricists The Remnant perform at Cooper Blue. Back in college, they performed at a spoken word event at church and I’ve been hooked ever since.

My sunlight, my muse, do you even know?

Sunday

Ended the weekend with friends at Ormsby’s for a little bocce ball and bangers. Bangers & mash, that is. I have no idea why that weiner is called a banger. I didn’t make it up. And are those not the BIGGEST onion rings you’ve ever seen??????? They were delish!

Playing bocce ball. As many times as this game has been explained to me, I still don’t understand it.

Green smoothie challenge

It’s not secret that I love food. But breakfast isn’t something that I’m good at remembering to eat. I’m not much of a morning person so if I eat anything, it would be a packaged snack. The new recent craze has been smoothies. Never really cared for them until I learned that they don’t have to taste as thick as a milkshake. So today, I started a 30-day green smoothie challenge. I follow Simple Green Smoothies on Instagram and I’ve gotten TONS of great recipes to try.

All you have to do is sign up for the emails. Don’t worry about trying to figure out what to blend. You will receive a weekly email with recipes. Easy. This is a great way to start off the new year eating clean and healthy.

If you find that you don’t like the recipes they send you, by all means, experiment. I started with all the fruits (and veggies) I already had in my fridge. Staples: strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, bananas, oranges, tangerines, grapes, kale and spinach.

I would encourage you to join me on this challenge. If you blog about it, send me the link! Let’s share recipes! Let’s do this!!! Here’s to a healthy new year.

Shrimp and bacon corn chowder

While on my lunch break yesterday, I searched for new Pinterest food boards to make me even hungrier. I came across a pretty looking chowder that I decided to try last night. First of all, who knew reading a recipe could be so freaking hilarious. Whoever Bev is, she just got herself a new subscriber. Not to mention that all of her dishes look AMAZING.

*side note* I usually never follow recipes word for word. Here’s what I changed:

  1. I incorporated bacon into the chowder, not just as a topping.
  2. Culturally, Haitians are big on seasoning so I used a bunch of my favorites to jazz it up.
  3. Substituted stock for broth because I couldn’t find stock. What’s the difference anyway?!
  4. I didn’t have paprika. That’s why hers is more orange than mine.

Ingredients:

* 4 slices of bacon, cut into pieces
* 1/2 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
* 1/2 medium white onion, diced
* Seasonings: adobo, cayenne pepper, crushed red pepper, old bay, garlic powder, lawry’s, maggi, poultry seasoning, black pepper  & salt)
* 2, 8 3/4 oz cans of  Del Monte Whole Kernel corn (no salt added)
* 2 cups chicken broth
* 1/2 pint of heavy cream
* a small square of butter to saute
*olive oil

Prep work:

You should probably already purchase your shrimp peeled and deveined to make life easier. Soak the shrimp in lemon juice. Drain, then season with old bay.

The work:

Over medium heat, add your torn up pieces of bacon to the flying pan. Fry until the edges are golden. Taste test! Drain and set it aside. Save some of that fatty oil for later.

Okay, later.

Pump up the heat to medium-high and add your shrimp. Bev says to “sear” it. I’m not familiar with that term so I’ll say cook it until the edges turn golden brown. But take them out before the shrimp shrivels up! So I’ll say…a minute on each side. Remove from pan and set it along side your bacon.

Here’s where I got a little heavy-handed. I added BUTTUH. Warning: if you are diabetic, skip this please. You don’t really need it. All of the seasoning and the cream add so much flavor. And remember, the flavor takes a while to settle in. Don’t over do it. Also, skip the salt.

Saute your onions with all of the seasonings mentioned above for 5 minutes. Again, you really don’t need to add salt.

Add your corn to the fiesta and saute for another 3 minutes.

Now. Game changer. Add your broth and cream into a pot. Stir while it’s heating up. Add your onion & corn mixture to the pot. Let that simmer for another 30 minutes.

While that is happening, remove two cups from the pot (make sure to remove the bacon pieces!) and place it in the blender. Blend until smooth and return to the pot.

At this point, I realized that the consistency wasn’t thick enough for me. My friend suggested that I add some mash potato mix to thicken it up. It works! Just a few dashes though!

Lastly, add your shrimp and reserved bacon to top it off.  Simmer for another 15 minutes or so and then serve.

Notes on a plane

9:37pm EST 10.17.12
It’s almost ten pm est and I cannot sleep. Not sure where I am. In the sky somewhere, on my way to Frankfurt. I did really good with this flight. I made it to the airport on time. Checked my one suitcase and it was smooth sailing from there.
I will say though, connecting flights on extended trips like these are the worst. I flew from Atlanta to Newark and now to Germany. I want to sleep but I can’t. Had I gotten a direct flight like when I flew to London, I would be knocked out right now.
I’ve watched two movies: Brave and People Like Us. I read a few chapters from The Perks of Being a Wallflower. And I listened to Tony Braxton and Adele. Now I don’t know what to do. These seats hurt my back and it’s too cold to lean my head against the window. I want to stretch my legs so bad. Ugh.
“Close your eyes and think of me and you.” That worked once. Lets see…
11:10pm EST
It didn’t work. Well, kinda. I slept through about eight Stevie Wonder songs.
Our male flight attendant is really funny. Earlier for dinner he announced that we’d be having steak and potatoes. I started doing a happy dance in my head. When the female attendant came around, I was more than eager to tell her that I wanted steak. I figured, although lobster would be amazing, it would be too messy. So imagine my surprise when she asked if I wanted beef or chicken. Im sorry?! He tricked meee!  Well, trick me once, shame on you. Trick me TWICE, shame on me. For breakfast, we were supposed to have bacon and eggs. Instead, we got the smallest croissant ever created and a bowl of fruit. Ashton, where are you?
5:55am CEST 10.18.12
We landed an hour early in Frankfurt. Long story short, I got to see my good friend Bessie, rode on the autobahn and walked around a bit. I will be back!
2:15pm CEST 10.18.12
Dude!!! Lufthansa is THE best airline I have ever flown on! No seriously. Does it get better than this?! After spending a few hours in Frankfurt with my friend Bessie, I boarded the flight to Nigeria. Immediately I noticed the wide aisles and seats. When we took off, I noticed that Germany has so much more greenery than America. More and more, America is becoming less appealing to me. :(
I’ve been fighting the urge to fall asleep for some time now. I don’t want to be jet-lagged so I’m staying awake or at least trying to. I took a quick nap and when I looked out of my window, I saw nothing but white tops! The Alps, perhaps? I don’t know but it was beautiful.
The flight attendant announced that we would be served a light lunch. That was definitely unexpected. I heard the menu and assumed that maybe this lady is a prankster like the attendant on my previous flight. But NO. I really received lamb. LAMB. Actually, there was nothing “light” about my meal. I’m so shocked and happy!!! The best part is that there is FREE wine and no one asked me for ID!!! Yup, I’m slightly tipsy but its okay.
The flight attendant just convinced me to continue eating this raspberry cream thingie. I’m not a big fan of sweets but its…interesting.
Oh, I forgot to mention about this hot wet wipe. I saw the attendant coming down the aisle with it but I had no idea what for. After observing the people, I realized it was to wipe your face. I guess a quick clean up. I don’t know. I followed the crowd.
I’m watching the absolute worst movie: Moonrise Kingdom. Meh!!!!
I want more wine and I’m ready to sleep the rest of the way.
As a departing “light snack”, they offered a slice of pizza. I kindly declined. There is too much going on in my stomach right now. I did take the gummy bears and chocolate. Best. Treatment. Ever.
6:33pm WAT 10.18.12
Landed in Lagos without any issues. There was a man waiting for me when I arrived. Not much to say about it just yet except that traffic is truly a nightmare. I should probably not complain about Atlanta traffic in comparison to how long I spent in the car.
11:55pm WAT 10.18.12
I am finally getting sleepy. Everyone else is knocked out. Tomorrow is a new day, new adventure.

Weekend at a glance – Taste of atlanta #49

My past few weekends have been really chill as I’m saving all of my energy for my Nigeria trip. Nothing to run home and blog about. I had a really random weekend with a good friend Nykita is moving away pretty soon. I hate to see her go but I know that she will be great in Liberia.

Saturday

After a yummy brunch at Steam House Lounge. So. I’ve tried oysters twice before but I had a difficult time getting past the squishy texture. But, I was willing to give it one more try. After some convincing, I tried a small piece that was drizzled with lemon juice and hot sauce. Yummy!! I was seriously pleasantly surprised. I will try it again.

Afterwards, we made our way to a bridal shower. I tell you, moms make bridal events hilarious. The mother of the bride just kept the jokes coming. One of the best parts of the night was the toilet paper wedding dress. Each team was required to “design” an entire wedding dress out of a roll (or maybe two rolls) of toilet paper. They were both really nice actually. After viewing the designs, the judges (oh yes, there was a panel straight from Project Runway) decided that Nykita was the winner of “toilet paper fashion”.

Sunday

Just imagine 80 of Atlanta’s yummiest restaurants all in one place. Depending on the amount of tickets you purchased, you were able to sample tasty dishes from all kinds of restaurants. I won’t say that I am a foodie buuuut, I love, love, food. I was in Heaven.

First, we tasted the chili from BrickTops. Topped with a dollop of sour cream. Perfection.

My absolute favorite were the barbeque shrimp and grits from Max Lager’s. Seriously the best I’ve ever had.

I’m a huge meat eater. Pause. I LOVE RIBS! I will be paying D.B.A. Barbeque a visit soon.

OH??? You thought there would be a taste of Atlanta without one of Atlanta’s finest dining establishments?! C’mon.

Her outfit definitely caught my eye. I was trying not to be too creepy, though.

We had a blast. Well done, Atlanta.
