Recently, I met up and had dinner with a friend. We caught up on each other’s lives, and eventually we got on the topic of why things never worked out between us. I kept it real with him and said it was because he never pursued me. He’d often check on me but never made any plans. To me, a pursuit involves more persistence than that. I’m sure he knew this. And living in Atlanta where there’s a million women to one man, it’s so easy to bounce from one babe to the next without much effort.
I am in awe of people who break all social norms in order to be their authentic selves. You can’t help but to notice these people, either. One of those unforgettable people is Iris Apfel. You may not know of her but you’ve definitely seen her and her unmistakable over-sized owl-like glasses. “All the better to see you with,” she says.
I would say that fate lead Apfel to becoming the style icon she is now. Born in Queens, NY to a decorator and a fashionista, Apfel had all the humble makings of an artistic life. She studied art history and design in school. She later married and started a textile and design firm with her husband. When the Metropolitan Museum of Art displays a collection of your clothes as a tribute to your style; and when you’re given the opportunity to redesign the interior of the White House for NINE Presidential administrations, mama, you’ve made it. Rest easy.
Is it me or have the red carpet fashions become highly unimaginative and outdated? Spaghetti straps? Overly-used metallics? Stringent silhouettes? Outrageously poofy ball gowns? And why was everyones teeth so yellow *cough -Mel Gibson- cough*? Also, even the cameras can’t hide those crow’s-feet. Everyone is getting visibly older and plastic surgery is failing. God bless Hollywood.
I don’t really care to watch award shows but I am here for the red carpet fanfare. Seen also here.
I won’t waste my time posting pictures of the worst dressed *cough -Lucy Liu, Halle Barry and Sienna Miller- cough* because I don’t want to take away from all the pretty posted below.
Next time, I’d love to post some men’s fashion but I’m always disappointed in what I see. Granted, it is a “black tie” affair but I wish they’d try something different. And maybe that’s why I can appreciate Kanye’s sense of style because he isn’t afraid to push the envelope. Hopefully, we will see a bit more from the men in future red carpet events.
All of the looks were pretty boring to me. I think I’m over the long elaborate gowns. I’m ready to see some legs. If the gowns weren’t boring, they were over the top. *cough* Beyonce *cough*
Anyhow, here are my favorites from the evening, in order.
